To avoid the "grown-out layers" look, ask your stylist for choppy layers. This will make your layers grow out with your hair and give your locks lots of volume and an edgy look.
More Bang For Your Buck
Bangs are a simple way to get style, but of course we know they can be more trouble than they're worth. For the lucky few of you who have perfected the art of trimming your own bangs, by all means- - go for it. As for the rest of us, most stylists offer free bang trims between haircuts, especially if you're a loyal client. Add a fierce fringe and you could leave the rest of your hair one straight length for awhile.
Color Caution
If you're pinching pennies, now is not the time to go for crazy highlights. Unless you have the bucks to pay for re-do's every now and then, those highlights will grow out leaving ridiculous roots in their wake. If you're going to go with a dye-job, go for a single-process color so your roots can easily blend in or be touched up easily at home.
